About
Marinus Welman was born in Amsterdam, Holland, and started drawing and painting as a child. As a young boy in Europe, he would often paint food from his mother’s cookbook because his family was starving due to the Nazi occupation of his home country.
Years later, he sailed the world’s oceans while working on an old rusty Liberty Ship left over from World War II, where he gathered impressions that still figure in his artwork today, such as the stormy North Atlantic, the indigo Indian Ocean, and the balmy tropical skies.
Welman’s art education began in Europe where he apprenticed with Artists Franz and Jan Hazeveld, in Amsterdam, and later studied at the Kunstnijverheids School and the Academy van Beeledende Kunst, Amsterdam. After immigrating to the United States in 1955, he continued his studies of the figure at Art Center in Los Angeles, CA.
Through the years, Welman has won numerous awards and accolades for his artwork and has exhibited his work in countless galleries and museums. Welman’s paintings are now held in private and corporate collections worldwide, including in the U.S., Australia, Europe and Japan. He currently resides in Orange, CA, where he continues to paint on location and in his private studio.
